The Load Volume Scanner history begins in 1998, when New Zealand innovator Wayne West set out to solve the problem of accurately counting truckloads of material. His invention, first called Tally Clerk, was the prototype for what would become the globally recognised Loadscan Load Volume Scanner (LVS) system.

Wayne tested the unit extensively on an Auckland construction site, where it successfully monitored 150,000 m³ of fill material moved by truck and trailer units. By 1999, the Tally Clerk became the first certified volumetric load measurement system in New Zealand.

Early Adoption and Certification

In 2000, Daltons, a leading compost and mulch producer in Matamata, became the first customer to deploy a certified LVS. They used it to measure inbound bulk raw materials and bill outbound products. The integrated Loadscan Overview software simplified billing by replacing handwritten dockets with accurate digital reporting.

By 2006, Wayne expanded development alongside engineers to secure trade approval in Australia. Just a year later, eight units were sold across New Zealand’s quarrying, civil construction, and mulch industries, while four more went to Australia.

Global Expansion of Loadscan

The history of Load Volume Scanners reached the USA in 2009, when PR Russell Mulch adopted the LVS for monitoring processed product loads. Soon after, Loadscan collaborated with Australia’s National Institute of Weights and Measures (NMI) to gain trade approval, which was achieved in 2010. This milestone led to further sales in Texas, including to New Earth, a large compost producer.

In 2012, Carey West, son of Wayne West, took over the company and rebranded it as Loadscan. With vision and determination, Carey expanded exports by 2013 into Canada, Mexico, Mongolia, Russia, Senegal, Zambia, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Innovation and Technology Growth

By 2014, Loadscan introduced portable, semi-portable, and fixed gantry LVS models, widening applications across industries. These systems could measure a diverse range of trucks, from on-road trailers to off-road articulated dumpers.

The mid-2010s saw major breakthroughs:

2015: Expansion back into Australia with Fulton Hogan, applying LVS technology in underground mining.

2016: Entry into the European market with sales in Germany and Switzerland, including RWE, Europe’s largest coal mine.

That same year, Loadscan installed its first solar-powered trailer LVS system in Senegal, supporting 24-hour operations in remote conditions.

A Global Leader in Payload Management

Today, the Load Volume Scanner history reflects innovation, perseverance, and global growth. From its origins as Tally Clerk in New Zealand, Loadscan has become the trusted name in volumetric load measurement, delivering accuracy, efficiency, and safety across civil construction, quarrying, mulch, mining, and bulk material industries worldwide.

One of the biggest challenges operators face is ensuring that volumes of overburden and extracted material are measured correctly. With the original Loadscan Load Volume Scanner (LVS), quarry operators now have the technology they need to improve accuracy, streamline processes, and boost profits.

Why Loadscan is a Game-Changer for Quarry Mining

The Loadscan quarry mining solution provides a fast, drive-through quarry truck scanning system that captures exact volumetric measurements of every load. Each truck is automatically identified using an RFID tag, ensuring every load is tracked and logged without delay.

Unlike weighbridges, which can be skewed by material density, moisture, or compaction, the Loadscan LVS offers precise quarry load measurement by scanning actual load volume. This gives operators confidence in their reporting and the ability to optimize mining haulage efficiency.

Eliminating Haul Back Losses

For quarry and mining operations, “haul back” material can distort daily tallies and inflate costs. Loadscan solves this problem by scanning trucks on their return leg, identifying any material still in the truck, and deducting it from the day’s totals. This feature ensures operators don’t pay for material that wasn’t actually moved—delivering true accountability in overburden load management.

Accurate mining payload data: Volumetric measurement ensures confidence in reporting.

Operational efficiency: Drive-through scanning reduces downtime and streamlines operations.

Improved profitability: Eliminate overcharging and wasted resources.

Accountability and transparency: Each load is logged and stored for later analysis, improving quarry operations optimization.

Future-Proofing Quarry Operations

As demand for efficiency grows, companies need tools that improve accuracy and productivity. With Loadscan’s volumetric scanning system, operators can enhance mining productivity tools and ensure every truck load is measured with precision.

Adopting load volume scanning technology from Loadscan means improved haul truck volume accuracy, greater efficiency, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing every load is accounted for.
