Hindustan Zinc, the world’s second largest zinc producer, currently have four load volume scanners (LVS) in action to monitor material, which is carted by numerous trucks coming and going from their various mines.

At its Rajpua-Dariba mine, Hindustan Zinc’s oldest mine, they have a custom-mounted Loadscan (LVS-3CMX model) underground to measure ore, where its crushed before taken to the surface by lift. Within this mine there’s also a block-mounted portable unit (LVS-3BMP), which is positioned at their portal to measure trucks as they come to the surface.

Another two custom-mounted scanners (LVS-3CMX) were purchased for the Zawar mine complex – a group of mines that symbolise the company’s legacy and contribute constant addition to its reserve and resource base. 

The Loadscan LVS is the original non-contact, automated ‘drive-through’ truck load measurement instrument. It’s an affordable, effective alternative to heavy-duty truck scales for the monitoring, tracking, and management of load data.

Compared to conventional weighing systems, Loadscan boasts greater accuracy in payload measurements. And unlike permanent weighbridge installations (that require extensive site works) the LVS is quick and easy to set up so trucks can be scanned without delay.

As the target vehicle drives under the scanner, the LVS precisely scans the load and creates a 3D model or “surface profile”. By comparing this profile with that stored on file for the same vehicle when empty, the LVS is then able to calculate the load volume to a proven accuracy of +/- 1% or to the point of resolution which is .1m³.

All the mining trucks in Hindustan’s fleet are fitted with RFID tags, allowing their LVS’ (which feature tag readers) to automatically identify each truck it as it passes under the scanner and match it to its load.

By working from volume rather than weight, Hindustan obtain a more accurate measure of their materials. The LVS literally ‘sees’ the load, whereas volume measurement converted from the weight generated from a weighing system is commonly effected by environment factors such as moisture and varying material densities.

The custom mount head on the LVS-3CMX was the perfect option for the various sites due to it being able to be mounted virtually anywhere, either directly, or by custom mount. This makes it great for attaching on mining portals, tunnels or for attaching to the side of buildings. The Loadscan LVS custom mount truck measurement units can be hard wired to a site office or run via a dedicated Loadscan kiosk.

The Loadscan LVS-3BMP is the portable option, perfect for large or long-term portable truck measurement projects where there may be the need to move the load scanning location. The unit is mounted on a precast concrete mounting block making it easy to move around site by forklift or by lifting from its mounting points.

The Philippines’ largest producer of lateritic nickel ore is improving efficiency having installed two load volume scanners (LVS) at its Taganito mine site.

Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) wanted to look at product movement onsite and measure carry-back, which led them to purchasing two LVS systems from Loadscan.

NAC has a long operating history, starting with the sale of ore in 1977 from its first mine, Rio Tuba. A large part of the municipal land is identified as a mining reservation because of its mineral deposits, though farming and fishing are also sources of livelihood for the residents.
The LVS system NAC has purchased utilises laser scanning and RFID technologies, combined with software that creates 3D model images of trucks, to measure the exact volume of the material loaded in a truck or trailer bin.

Joseph Limos of Nickel Asia commented, “We wanted to check the daily volume hauled from our contractors. The LVS is easy to install and shows good timely results. Now it’s easy for us to monitor the correct volumes and dead load for every contractor’s dump trucks”

The Tanganito mine exports saprolite and limonite ore. It also provides limonite to the adjacent operations and provides hauling and port facilities.

The Loadscan portable LVS was selected by NAC. The portable system is ideal for long-term truck measurement projects where there may be the need to move the load scanning location. The unit is fixed to a precast concrete mounting block making it relatively easy to move around site by forklift.

Loadscan’s portable LVS system can be up and running within hours and can be operated by mains power, approved generators or solar power.

Aeris Resources’ Tritton copper mine operation in Nyngan, NSW, Australia was the first underground mining company in Australia to purchase and install a Load Volume Scanner (LVS) payload measurement system from Loadscan, and has increased trucking factors by 9.7%.

The reason for installing the LVS system was consistent inaccuracy with their previous payload measurement system that was being used to track daily ore production. The mine used a combination of paper records along with load weight information.

Truck operators were filling out time sheets for each shift, documenting their activities, such as truck ID, load destination, time loaded and time dumped. It was then combined with load weight information gained from a weighbridge and uploaded to a production tracking database, all of which the LVS system now does automatically.

Some of the issues the Tritton mine faced with their original system included limited forward compatibility. Any upgrades to the trucking fleet meant current weighing systems quickly became redundant, and the weighbridge system had limited data compatibility with their production tracking database. Also, due to the weighbridge requiring physical contact it was prone to wear and tear, requiring regular maintenance. All of which cost a considerable amount of time and money. Matthew Gouldstone from Tritton mine says: “the scanner receives no wear and tear as it is scanning as opposed to weighing and is much more durable given the conditions it operates under.”

He adds: “There have been two major benefits gained from installing the LVS system, one being the immediate, accurate load volume has allowed for real time feedback to underground loader operators, allowing for informal coaching from the supervisors using the 3D load profiling software. This has resulted in the trucks being loaded to capacity and has increased trucking factors by 9.7%, ultimately resulting in a lower cost per tonne hauled.

The second benefit is the data tracking software. Cycle time is easy to track and a simple interface allows supervisors to understand loads per shift or day. Training the supervisors how to use this data has meant 10-20 minutes per shift has been saved from reading back through plods and tallying up tonnes moved. The level of detail obtained by the LVS is impressive to everyone who has used the software. Overall the return on investment has been extremely quick, within the first full month after installation the LVS has paid for itself.”

Loadscan’s first off-the-grid solar powered Load Volume Scanner (LVS) system is proving successful at the Teranga Gold Corporation in Senegal, Africa.

The gold mining operation purchased Loadscan’s LVS-3TMM and commissioned them to manufacture and supply its first 24-hour solar system to measure the quantity of gold bearing ore carted by trucks from other mine sites in the area to the processing facility.

The LVS system utilises laser scanning and RFID technologies combined with software that creates 3D model images of trucks to measure the exact volume of the material loaded in a truck or trailer bin.

The solar system generates power during the day and charges a battery pack that powers the scanner throughout the night. It has an option to connect to mains power or a generator to power and recharge the batteries if the solar generation is not enough to keep them topped up. To date, it has been completely self-sufficient: running off-grid with all power coming from the solar system. The trucks have RFID tags so that they automatically get identified by the LVS system.

Carey West, Managing Director of Loadscan said, “It was an interesting and fulfilling project configuring the solar system to Teranga Golds requirements. It was a first for the team at Loadscan, and we’re proud to have produced a fully portable self-contained solar system that has proven to deliver power and keep the LVS system working 24-hours a day without interruption.

“The LVS system was out in a remote location. With the nearest power 1.5km away, the power cables would have needed to be trenched underground and would have been costly to install. With the Loadscan solar system in operation the mine site did not need to trench power cables out to the scanner or need to run a generator every day where maintenance and constant refueling would have become expensive and unreliable.”

The scanner is connected to the main office by point to point Wifi so that the data from the scanner is transferred directly back to the office where they use Loadscan’s Overview reporting software.
