Load Volume Scanner History: How Loadscan Revolutionised Bulk Measurement

The Load Volume Scanner history begins in 1998, when New Zealand innovator Wayne West set out to solve the problem of accurately counting truckloads of material. His invention, first called Tally Clerk, was the prototype for what would become the globally recognised Loadscan Load Volume Scanner (LVS) system.

Wayne tested the unit extensively on an Auckland construction site, where it successfully monitored 150,000 m³ of fill material moved by truck and trailer units. By 1999, the Tally Clerk became the first certified volumetric load measurement system in New Zealand.

Early Adoption and Certification

In 2000, Daltons, a leading compost and mulch producer in Matamata, became the first customer to deploy a certified LVS. They used it to measure inbound bulk raw materials and bill outbound products. The integrated Loadscan Overview software simplified billing by replacing handwritten dockets with accurate digital reporting.

By 2006, Wayne expanded development alongside engineers to secure trade approval in Australia. Just a year later, eight units were sold across New Zealand’s quarrying, civil construction, and mulch industries, while four more went to Australia.

Global Expansion of Loadscan

The history of Load Volume Scanners reached the USA in 2009, when PR Russell Mulch adopted the LVS for monitoring processed product loads. Soon after, Loadscan collaborated with Australia’s National Institute of Weights and Measures (NMI) to gain trade approval, which was achieved in 2010. This milestone led to further sales in Texas, including to New Earth, a large compost producer.

In 2012, Carey West, son of Wayne West, took over the company and rebranded it as Loadscan. With vision and determination, Carey expanded exports by 2013 into Canada, Mexico, Mongolia, Russia, Senegal, Zambia, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Innovation and Technology Growth

By 2014, Loadscan introduced portable, semi-portable, and fixed gantry LVS models, widening applications across industries. These systems could measure a diverse range of trucks, from on-road trailers to off-road articulated dumpers.

The mid-2010s saw major breakthroughs:

  • 2015: Expansion back into Australia with Fulton Hogan, applying LVS technology in underground mining.

  • 2016: Entry into the European market with sales in Germany and Switzerland, including RWE, Europe’s largest coal mine.

  • That same year, Loadscan installed its first solar-powered trailer LVS system in Senegal, supporting 24-hour operations in remote conditions.
