For major infrastructure projects across New Zealand and Australia — from Western Sydney Airport to Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel — one of the biggest challenges is accurately measuring and managing the sheer volume of aggregate and spoil moved on, off, and around worksites.

Traditionally, contractors relied on bulk density conversions or manual checks to determine load volumes. These methods were often inaccurate, time-consuming, and costly. Road Metals Ltd, a specialist in crushed and screened aggregates, needed a more reliable way to measure the cubic metres of gravel and spoil hauled to each contract.

Why Road Metals Chose Loadscan

Road Metals turned to Loadscan’s load volume scanner (LVS) technology to solve the problem of aggregate load measurement. The LVS system uses laser scanning and RFID technology to create accurate 3D profiles of truckloads, delivering volume measurement accuracy of +/-1%.

“Each contract is paid for by volume, so we find the scanner perfect for this. It gives us the cubic metres for each truck and trailer and then provides a total tally each day, each week, and each month.”

Within months of installing their first LVS, Road Metals was so impressed that they invested in two more units — a mobile LVS that can be set up on-site in under an hour, and a portable LVS mounted on a precast concrete block for long-term projects.
