How volume scanning reshapes customer relationships

For many civil and earthmoving operations, tracking material volumes across multiple sites is a constant challenge. Disputes over load size, inconsistent ticketing systems, and unclear measurement methods often strain relationships between contractors, suppliers, and clients. But for Alan Payne and The Kearney Companies, volumetric scanning has transformed this dynamic entirely – delivering a level of transparency that customers now actively request.
What once caused friction between material suppliers and haulers has become a point of clarity. As Alan explains, the scanner removes the guesswork and establishes a single source of truth.
"The dispute would be with a supplier of the material. And now there's no dispute with them because it's actually what it is they're getting paid for – averaging about 16.5yd³ per truck."
Daily reporting has become central to how The Kearney Companies work with vendors. Even when suppliers do not have their own scanner, the team provides a detailed breakdown of every load hauled the previous day.
"If they don't have their own volumetric scanner, we'll send a report next morning – for the day before – of all the loads that we hauled from their location for that day.
If a load or two didn't get scanned, we'll tell them what the average is for the day, and they'll bill us those extra loads at the average."
Cross-referencing scanner data with traditional ticketing ensures accuracy, alignment, and a shared understanding of exactly what was moved.
This approach has become so reliable that suppliers often adopt the scanner's figures as the basis for their invoices. In some cases, The Kearney Companies even install scanners for suppliers or at customer job sites to support full end-to-end transparency.
"One of the interesting things is that some of our clients now will ask us to pay for the material off our load scanner."
By providing customers with daily reports detailing hauled yards and total cubic yards moved, the company has built a reputation for accuracy and fairness – a standard increasingly recognised across the industry.
And when an occasional load goes unscanned?
"Typically we'll just work out the average for that day, and that's what that load will be."
In an environment where trust is currency, volumetric scanning has become one of The Kearney Companies' most valuable tools.
