Volumetric Load Scanning Boosts Accuracy at Dalton’s Compost and Mulch Facility

Daltons Ltd, a family-owned state-of-the-art compost and mulch facility, has implemented volumetric load scanning technology to streamline and improve their operations.

“Having a Loadscan scanner on site has revolutionised the measuring process at Daltons Ltd where we manufacture bulk potting mixes, mulches, composts and supply sand for construction use.”

— Colin Parker, General Manager, Daltons Ltd

By using Loadscan’s load volume scanner (LVS), Daltons now measures incoming and outgoing truck loads with precision, ensuring they only pay for the materials purchased and charge customers accurately.

Replacing Manual Measurements with Volumetric Scanning

Traditionally, Daltons relied on manual methods to estimate truck loads, which were prone to error due to moisture content, compaction, and operator inconsistency. Volumetric load scanning works by comparing empty bin profiles against loaded bin profiles for the same vehicle, accurately calculating the true load volume in cubic metres. This eliminates guesswork and removes discrepancies caused by varying weight-to-volume ratios in bulk materials such as sand, compost, and mulch.

Colin Parker explains:

“It has saved us lots of time and money. Most products’ weight-to-volume ratio changes depending on rainfall. A 30-tonne load of wet product occupies less volume than the same weight of dry product. With a load scanner, you are only paying for the cubic metres purchased.”

Accuracy, Efficiency, and Transparency

Daltons’ LVS system combines laser scanning and RFID technologies with software that generates 3D truck models, allowing real-time bulk material measurement and monitoring. The system supports:

  • Accurate truck load measurement for incoming and outgoing materials

  • Automated management accounting reports within minutes

  • Reliable load verification for both sellers and buyers

  • Tracking of compaction and moisture variations in bulk materials

The result is a faster, more efficient, and transparent operation. Daltons can now confidently manage bulk product invoicing, monitor loads in real time, and reduce workload related to queries about load size.

Conclusion

By implementing volumetric load scanning, Daltons Ltd has transformed the way they measure and manage bulk materials. The system ensures accuracy, reduces human error, improves operational efficiency, and provides the transparency needed for both management and customers.

  • 60 m³ x 6 day week = 360 m³ of export equates to approx. 16 truckloads at a 22m³ per load factor not being carted resulting in a big reduction in ‘lost cubic meters’.

  • With 320,000 cubic metres of earthworks at the Pimpama project, the Load Volume Scanner provided piece of mind for both Coops and the contracted trucking company.

  • The Loadscan portable LVS was selected by NAC. The portable system is ideal for long-term truck measurement projects where there may be the need to move the load scanning location.

  • Hawkesbury City Council was tasked with clearing a major landslip on the banks of the Hawkesbury River near the settlement of Wiseman’s Ferry, around 75km northwest of Sydney. There, almost 30,000m2 of earth had come down.
